Barsi Semagam Jan 2007: |
Brahm Giani Sant Baba Tara Singh Brahm Giani Sant Baba Charan Singh Jan 2007. The quiet city of Sarhali came alive as tens of thousands of Sikhs converged upon Gurpuri Sahib for the annual Barsi Semagam of Baba Tara Singh ji and Baba Charan Singh ji. Preparations started at least a month in advance and as the date neared, tents, festive lightings, and accomodation facilities for visitors were set up - with much of the work carried out by volunteers and well-wishers. As this event is increasingly becoming popular with overseas Sikhs, a new accomodation building was built to cater to the needs of these guests. These have attached bathrooms with water heaters. Other improvements are also being made for the comfort of all members of the sangat. As with previous years, the barsi started off with a 3-day Sri Akhand Paath Sahib on the 30th of Dec 2006. An all-night kirtan darbar was held on the eve of the barsi and the crowds stayed up to enjoy the melodious kirtan despite the sub-zero temperatures in the Punjab plains. Bhog Sri Akhand Paath Sahib was held by 10am on the 1st of Jan 2007, followed by a kirtan darbar in which several well-known kethakars and kirtani jethas, some coming from overseas, took part. A spectacular horseback performance by a group of Nihangs also took place, thrilling the crowds. On the 2nd of Jan, the day kicked off with the mass weddings of 47 poor couples - with all expenses borne by Sampardai Kar Sewa Sarhali Sahib. Amrit Sanchar also took place on the same day in which many Sikhs took the next step of living the life of a Khalsa. A mela was also held outside the compound, complete with ferries wheels, merry-go-rounds and a huge number of stalls selling snacks, toys, kirtan CDs and other paraphenalia.
