Baba Tara Singh ji felt a dire need for higher education in Sarhali and its adjoining areas, He realised that besides spiritual education, formal education too was needed to make life meaningful. Illiteracy, he felt, was a curse and it had to be abolished. With this aim in mind, Baba ji took a decision of paramount importance and of far reaching consequences. In 1970, with the active cooperation of BAHIA (twenty-two villages of Sandhu gotar) he founded Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa College, Sarhali. It was in a way a humble tribute to the great sacrifices made by the Tenth Guru - Guru Gobind Singh Ji, to uphold the high ideals of Sikhism.

A brief reference to the circumstances then prevailing is necessary to appreciate the rare contribution made by Baba ji. Bus pass facility was then not available in Punjab. Economically poor parents could never think of sending their wards, especially girls, to Amritsar for higher education. Commuting daily was almost impossible. It was a cul-de-sac situation. Establishing the institution for higher education was a great boon for them.

Since then, with the blessings of Mahapurakh Sant Baba Tara Singh Ji and Sant Baba Charan Singh Ji, the college has been making rapid strides in the fields of higher education and sports. Today, the college has attained the foremost position among all the rural colleges of Punjab. Students belonging to different strata of society study here and they need not go to Amritsar for education. Under the benevolent supervision of Sant Baba Sukha Singh Ji. the present patron of the college, almost all the Information Technology courses have been introduced. These I.T Courses hold a great attraction for students. Our college students achieve distinctions in Guru Nanak Dev University examinations every year. The computer labs are equipped with the latest computers and Physics and Chemistry labs with latest gadgets and appliances. The library has been renovated and a fully A.C. reading hall has been constructed on the first floor. A state-of-the-art Gymnasium fitted with latest machines is available for indoor games and exercises. A modern Cafeteria is an added attraction for the students. The college has its own fleet of twenty buses for the commutation of students. Very nominal charges are taken from the students for the bus facility. Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa College, Sarhali was established by Sant Baba Tara Singh Ji with the Active Co-operation of the people of this area. The College has made rapid strides in academic and sports fields since then. New courses were introduced in the academic curriculum during Sant Baba Charan Singh Ji's patronage. The Present patron, Sant Baba Sukha Singh Ji, is making every effort to make the college a model to be envied. Baba Hakim Singh and S.Mukhtar Singh, the President and the Honorary Secretary of the college Managing Committee, are working very hard for the development of the college. With the whole-hearted co-operation of the Patron and the Managing Committee, the college has attained many achievements.

Every year, the academic session starts on a pious note with the observance of the religious ceremony of Bhog of Sri Akhand Path of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. A cultural programme incorporating inter colleges competition is held in the last week of October or in the first week of November. The Sports Day (annual Athletic Meet) is organized in February. Annual Prize Distribution (Sports) & Annual Prize Distribution (Academic) functions are held in the last week of February. Various colorful cultural items are presented in these functions. Guest lectures by subject experts are also arranged during the session.
